Types of Golden Retrievers

Being a famous dog breed people tend to know pretty much everything about Golden Retrievers, but has anyone ever tell you that there are actually three different types of Golden Retrievers? Well, at least for me, it was news.

Although there are no stark differences in personalities or demeanor, Golden Retrievers come in three major types:

American Golden Retriever

Among the three types, American Goldens turn out to be the most sought after. They are also recognized as the standard Golden Retriever breed. They flaunt a lush silky coat with comparatively longer hair in the shades of red, yellow, and white. Originally bred as hunting dogs, American Goldens make excellent security dogs. They have higher energy levels than other varieties and hence need plenty of exercise. With their people-pleasing attitude, they make ideal pets for families. Just like other types, they shed copiously.

Canadian Golden Retriever

In terms of appearance, Canadian Golden Retrievers stand out from the other two types. Their coats come in darker shades of golden and are quite appealing. They have short-haired coats and less feathering all over the body. Canadian Goldens are generally more tall and lanky than their American counterparts. Their loyalty and affection are considered to be unbeatable. Overall Canadian Goldens are similar to American Goldens in pretty much every way.

British Golden Retriever

What sets apart the British Golden from the other varieties is its luxurious cream-colored coat. Their coat is just as silky yet a bit shorter than American Goldens. They are quite easy-going and sociable and make great companions. A good thing about British Goldens is that they are slightly less prone to diseases than the other varieties. However, the British Golden Retriever is not recognized by AKC as a separate breed.

Personality

Golden Retrievers have a robust personality. They are considered intelligent and outgoing dogs with an eager-to-please attitude. Their joyful and sociable nature is what sets them apart from other breeds. Golden Retrievers are naturally athletic dogs and thrive in big spacious living spaces and are known to be very loyal to their owners. All these attributes make Golden Retrievers an ideal family dogs.
