The Hype Around Using CBD Oil With Pets

Many people have started to join the movement of using CBD oil with pets. After all, popularity has increased with jumping on the bandwagon when it comes to helping their own ailments such as anxiety, restless sleep, epilepsy, chronic pain, skin blemishes, and many more medical conditions. So, who is to say this non-psychotropic oil comprised of CBD and hemp would or would not work for pets? To answer this question, let’s delve into what CBD and hemp are, how they interact with nervous system receptors, symptomatic indications, and testimonials to their effectiveness.

What is CBD oil?

CBD is the acronym for Cannabidiol which is extracted from the flowers and buds of marijuana or hemp plants. It is one in over 120 cannabinoid compounds that are naturally found in these plants. CBD hemp oil is the primary non-psychoactive chemical of the plant, derived from the stalks and seeds. This differs from the psychoactive properties of marijuana which is derived from the buds of the plant. Hemp naturally produces higher levels of CBD and lower levels of THC, making it the go-to oil that is medicinally used for humans and pets.

Is CBD oil legal?

The 2018 Farm Bill overwhelmingly passed in the U.S. Senate, allowing for the transfer of hemp-derived products across state lines for commercial or other purposes. The law labeled a significant distinction between hemp and marijuana. There were no restrictions placed on the sale, transport, or possession of hemp-derived products, as long as their production is consistent with the law. There are secondary rules to follow for those wanting to farm hemp plants. More information can be found here.

Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp will be managed by the Department of Agriculture as a crop rather than by the Justice Department as an illegal substance, according to Forbes.

How does CBD oil interact with the nervous system?

The human body has a system that probably most have never heard of: the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system is found in all mammals, therefore is present in cats and dogs. The responsibility of this system is to receive and translate signals from cannabinoid neurotransmitters relating to sleep, immune-responses, and pain. Using CBD oil with pets has an effect on how the endocannabinoid system is activated or inhibited, therefore affecting its influence within the body. It is in this way that ailments are controlled such as pain, epilepsy, and other aforementioned medical conditions.

The complete function of the endocannabinoid system is unknown, however, it modulates the regulation of homeostasis across all major body systems, affecting everything from sleep, appetite, pain, inflammation, memory, anxiety, nausea, mood, and even reproduction.

The endocannabinoid system was first discovered in the 1990s by L.A. Matsuda as scientists were trying to understand how THC affected the body. Dr. Matsuda was the first to describe the structure and functional expression of the cannabinoid receptor, CB-1.
